What’s the big deal about salt?

26 Oct 2017

Well, salt makes food taste good, and if you eat too much of it, it will elevate your blood pressure. Is that all?

A brief history

Very early on, man discovered that salt was important in staying healthy, flavoring food and especially preserving food. In some cultures salt was even used as a form of currency due to its value. The Roman soldiers received a bag of salt, as part of their pay. This was called “salerium” from which we get the modern word salary. Also that is how the old saying “Worth their weight in salt”, came about.

Animals in the wild would go for miles to find a natural salt lick to add salt to their bodies, even domesticated animals need salt as well and farmers provide salt licks for them. Man would follow the wild animals to those salt licks once it was discovered how important it was to us. Then over the centuries, salt mines from ancient dried seas would be mined and the salt transported over trade routes to their destination. An example of this today is Himalayan salt. The traders that controlled the salt trading route were highly regarded as they controlled the world’s most valuable ingredient that humans really cannot live without.

Salt is an ingredient in the making of bread, a tiny pinch of salt can make something sweet taste even sweeter, and can take the bitterness out of coffee. Salt is found naturally in our bodies, and of course is found in the worlds oceans. So salt therefore, has lifesaving, as well as magickal and spiritual properties.

Spiritually speaking, salt is considered to be the great neutralizer. It can help cleanse, heal, and balance energy – whilst all the time repelling negative vibrations and energies. If you are dealing with any kind of negative energy, black magic, hexes, ghosts, or plain nasty entities, salt can serve as a powerful spiritual weapon. It has lifesaving as well as spiritual and magickal uses in our lives.

Salt preserves food, and so it represents an absence of decay. In any of the forms salt takes it is incorruptible, whereas decay is corruptibility.Because Salt is incorruptible, negativity is repelled by a symbol such as Salt, because negativity exists only to seek to corrupt (physically or spiritually).

There are many different types of salt that can be found on today’s market and most of these types are only separated by the addition of different minerals, but at their most basic level they are all sodium chloride.

Table salt, in some countries has additives to make it free-flowing, and here in NZ because our soil is very much lacking in iodine, a substance our bodies need for optimum health, we add iodine to our table salt – Although of course you can still purchase plain sea salt with no additives whatsoever. This plain sea salt is the very best type to be used for spiritual protection. The plain stuff you buy at your local supermarket.

So how can salt be used on a spiritual level?

Throughout our day, we come into contact with many different people and environments. Everything and every single person has its own energy vibration and auric field (spiritual body). This energy can be of a high frequency or a positive vibration, or a very low frequency, or negative vibration. Because our personal energy field is constantly giving and receiving energies from around us, any energies we come in contact with, will to one degree or another affect our own energy.

As a result our auric field, or energy body is constantly readjusting itself to bring our energies back into balance as they should be. Sometimes though, the negative energies we encounter can linger and accumulate over time. For those visual people, see it like house dust that just settles despite your best efforts. This can accumulate on our own energies and also in our homes.

Sometimes this also can attract spirits or entities to us in the same manner that the ‘dust’ is attracted to our energies – or this could be because we brought an object into our home that this spirit came with – or we were in a situation that allowed an energy to attach or follow us. This is not at all uncommon and can be easy to remedy with the use of Salt and your intent.

How to use Salt spiritually

  • It can be used to cleanse your energy fields. If you have a bath tub, a salt water bath is a wonderful way to cleanse your aura and to increase your health and vitality. It is a good habit to get into, to cleanse your energies on a regular basis. There are a number of ways you can do this, but for this one – a salt water bath, simply run your bath as you normally would (unless your medical practitioner says otherwise if you have health issues), add a good 2 -3 handfuls of unrefined, additive-free, salt to your bath water. You can also add an essential oil like lavender if you wish. Then simply lay back and relax in the water for 20 – 30 minutes.
  • If like me you don’t own a bath tub, then you can simply soak your feet – or better still go for a paddle in the ocean or a swim if you can. But whilst you are soaking, make it your intention to let go of any negativity and just relax. When you get out of the bath, if you wish you can rinse off the salt water in a shower, but this is not necessary. Be sure to drink a glass of water when you get out, to help your body flush away any toxin released by the bath.
  • Mop your floors, window sills, door frames with salt water, this adds a lot of positivity and freshness to a room and will take away negativity and raise the vibrations of the place. You will actually feel the difference.
  • Place a salt water bowl in the corners of any room that feels particularly heavy or negative. Place it in the room and leave it there for a number of hours – overnight even. After that you then drain the water in the hand basin or toilet and flush it away. The salt water will absorb the negative energy. When you drain the water, be careful not to touch it as it has absorbed the negative energy. If you accidentally do get some of the water on you, simply wash the affected part in running water to remove the negative energy from you.
  • Visit a beach and have a paddle in the water, at least ankle deep. You will feel cleaner and more grounded. Often times people come away from the beach feeling really tired, this is because the water releases a lot of negative energy from your aura and it needs time to readjust. Also because being at the beach totally relaxes most people. 🙂
  • You can simply throw salt around you to dispel negativity. My mum always used to throw salt over her shoulders, as a kid I never understood why she did this.
  • You can leave a bowl of salt in a room to absorb negative energies.
  • Place a little salt at each corner of your bed if you are having entities invading your sleep. In extreme cases you can encircle your bed with salt.
  • If you have an item that has bad vibes, lay it on a bed of salt, or in a container filled with salt.
  • If you want to boost anything you are wanting to manifest in your life, then you can hold a little salt in your hand, make a wish, then cast the salt into a fire or body of water, or flush it down the toilet.
  • You can lay a line of salt at entrances to your home to prevent entities and energies entering (for nasty entities see black salt below), you can also add a line of salt across your bedroom door to prevent entry at night.
  • You can also simply toss salt around the rooms to dispell negativity (bit messy though) – OR you can dissolve a good perhaps half cup of salt in a litre of water, put it in a spray bottle and spray in the same manner you would smudge a house to cleanse the energies.

So these are the basic uses of regular salt. Sometimes however, in the cases of spirit who really don’t want to move along and regular salt doesn’t seem to be making a difference you can make what is called So these are the basic uses of regular salt. Sometimes however, in the cases of spirit who really don’t want to move along and regular salt doesn’t seem to be making a difference you can make what is called Black Salt. sometimes called Witches Salt, Drive Away Salt, Sal Negro, & Indio Salt – this is not to be confused with Black Lava and Black Indian salts, they are edible – this is not. This is a blend you create yourself, such as my personal stock in the photo below.

Black Salt

Black salt is a Black salt is a very powerful cleansing agent, and a primary protective element, it is used specifically to drive away evil and negative energy. It has long been used in European Folk traditions, African Diaspora , in American Folk Magic, and many Latin American/ Caribbean religious practices. It is not hard at all to make, it merely takes a little time on your part and focused intent. It should be noted that Black salt is a step up from regular salt…. Salt with a punch if you like. Using black salt to absorb and contain negativity is not black magick or evil.

  • Sprinkle Black Salt across the thresholds of your home including patio doors and across the bottom of window sills, this will also reflect back any negativity sent your way.
  • Sprinkle it on the floor and then sweep it up. Sprinkle it on the front porch and sweep it up out towards the street.
  • Sprinkle it around the perimeter of your property .
  • Keep some in a small dish under your bed or in a little bag under your pillow to negate bad dreams and ward off unwanted spirits.
  • Add a pinch to floor cleansing washes to cleanse your home, and front walkway of negativity.
  • Add a pinch to your bath water when you are feeling especially depressed, angry, or negative.
  • Keep a small amount on your person in a small flannel bag, in your work desk, or taped under your chair at work or school – this will help to deflect gossips, bullies, rude or nasty co-workers, and bad bosses attention, and negative spirits or entities.

There are a number of other uses for Black Salt, but they are outside the scope of this document or its purpose.

Because Black Salt is very effective at removing negative entities, beings – or simply plain negativity, which it soaks up like a sponge, the old salt needs to be swept up, removed, and replaced regularly

How to make Black Salt

Black Salt is very easy to make it only takes a few ingredients.

  • Firstly you will need your regular, additive free sea salt (although any salt will do in a pinch).
  • Charcoal – this can be from a fireplace, barbecue, or you can use activated charcoal, or charcoal tablets that are used to burn powder incense.
  • A pinch of Black pepper or Cayenne pepper (this is optional, just gives it more of a kick)
  • Ashes from any incense you may have burnt, (recycling is good :D). You can also specifically burn protective and expelling herbs like sage or rosemary or lavender or vervain, then grind their ashes in this mix if you wished to.
  • A Mortar and Pestle, or rolling pin and plastic bags, or hammer – anything that can crush the ingredients together.

Grind the pepper, charcoal, and ash into a fine powder. Then you mix, it in equal proportions 1 part ash mix, to one part salt (this amount is very flexible). You can however, make the mix as dark as you want it to be, it makes no difference to the effectiveness of the mix.

Here is the thing. When you are crushing the charcoal and ashes mix together, you need to be focusing your intent on what this is to be used for. The same when you mix the salt and ash mix togther. Intent is the key, as with everything I talk about in this group. Intent is the key. It is your intent that activates this mix. If you wish, you can always say a prayer over it, If you are religious. If you are not you can visualize what it is used for. Intent is the key. You could be saying to yourself. “This ash and charcoal are to remove and expell negative entities, beings, negativity of any description from my house, from around wherever this powder is laid….etc” you say what feels right to you. It is now ready to use.

Store this salt in an airtight container, otherwise it will soak up the humidity and you will be left after a time with a solid black salt brick. .
